松長 有慶 -総本山金剛峰寺座主 高野山真言宗管長-

高野山に生まれ、そこで育ち高野の春秋を写し続けてきた永坂嘉光さんの写真は『うるおいのある綾羅の美しさ』を そのまま映し出している。 密教の生きた世界を表現する事の出来る最適の写真家といってよいだろう。

第一部をなす「大師の軌跡』は、弘法大師の６２年に渡る生涯の足跡を、われわれがあらためて思い浮かべる事のできるように、 写真が構成されている。

史実と伝承を元に映像としてたどる事によって、同行２人の実感がおのずと湧き出てくるにちがいない。 浄界の美は、四季折々の高野山の朝夕を綿密に収録したものである、眼のさめる様な若葉の間を落下し、 地をはう水の流れに高野山独自の湿気をこめた霊気が感じられる。 満開の桃の花にもいうにいわれぬさびしさがあり、伽藍に舞う白雪に背景の山並みが静かに鼓動を繰り返す修繕の道場という 厳しさを裏に秘めて現出された華麗な曼荼羅世界、この世のいかなる汚濁も、たちまち浄界にかえってしまう聖域、 八葉の峯の千年にわたる歴史がここに生々しく息ずいている。

意義ある仕事がここにみごとに結実されているといってよいだろう。

深い精神性をもつ作品世界

永坂嘉光氏の、シンプルな中にも優雅さを兼ね備えた美しい作品に出会ったのは、1997 年の ことでした。この年、永坂氏はカーメルで開催されたある著名な写真家のワークショップに参 加するため。彼が教鞭をとる大阪芸術大学の学生たちを率いて、カリフォルニア州を訪れてい ました。カーメルは、その美しさを写真にとらえようと多くの写真家が住み、活動してきた 「写真の故郷」です。永坂氏の作品群は、密教寺院の集まる高野山という地に焦点をあてたも ので、国の違いはあっても、特定の場所にこだわった写真という意味においてカーメルの写真 家たちと共通のものを感じさせました。

永坂氏の作品を見たとき、彼の被写体への情熱が即座に伝わってきました。作品から感じ取 られる精神性と、ある特定の場所との深いつながりは、アンセル・アダムスとヨセミテ作品と の感性にも見られるものです。これはいってみれば、ある土地への愛情というものでしょう。 永坂氏とアダムスはどちらも長年にわたり、季節を超え、多様な天候の中で、自分が魅せられ た場所を撮り続けた写真家です。アダムスはモノクロ作品、永坂氏はカラー作品ですが、被写 体の精神と雄大さを記録したことに変わりはありません。

永坂氏の作品には高野山の景観への崇敬と、仏教寺院のもたらす静寂と輝きへの感謝の念が あらわれています。53 年前に高野山に生まれ、人生の大半にわたってこの地を撮り続けてきた 永坂氏は、高野山という被写体を深く理解しています。彼の作品からは、たとえそれが雪景色 であっても、仏教寺院と伝統儀式のもつ温かさと癒しが感じとられます。永坂氏は、障子を通 した夜明けの太陽の繊細な光や、森の道沿いの燈籠のきらめく光を写しとっています。そして 作品の中の人々や僧侶たちは、薄明かりの中のスローシャッターによる幻想的な表現になって います。

ウェストン・ギャラリーが永坂氏と出会った1997 年以来、世界中のさまざまな写真コレク ターが、彼の作品を購入してきました。永坂作品のもつ静けさと絵画的ですらある微妙な色合 いが人々を魅了するのです。彼の写真は高野山の平和と深遠な精神性を伝えています。「吹雪 の壇上伽藍」はそのよい例でしょう。

永坂氏のギャラリーとして彼の作品をお客様に紹介できること、そして永坂氏の友人である ことを誇りに思っています。

Spiritual World of Yoshimitsu Nagasaka

I was first introduced to the beauty and simple elegance of Yoshimitsu Nagasaka's work in 1997, when he brought a group of students from Osaka Art Institute to study under a noted Fine Art Photographer, in Carmel, California. Carmel has long been the home of photographers who have both lived here and worked to capture the beauty of the area in their images. Nagasaka's portfolio brought to my attention the same connection to place, although the location he focuses on is Koyasan, Japan a complex of Buddhist monasteries and temples on Mt.Koya.

Nagasaka's passion for his subject matter was immediately obvious to me. The spiritual quality and distinct connection to the landscape, reminded me strongly of the same qualities found in Ansel Adams' photographs of Yosemite: a love of the area. Both photographers photographed at their favorite site over a period of many years, in all seasons, and in varying weather conditiond. Tough Adams photographed in black and white and Nagasaka in color, they both recorded the spirit and grandeur of their subject matter.

Nagasaka's images demonstrate a deep reverence for the landscape of Koyasan, as well as appreciation for the serenity and radiance born of the Buddhist temples that he photographs. Nagasaka knows his subject: he was born in Koyasan 53 years ago and has spent much of that time recording the imagery of the area. His photographs are infused with the warmth and solace of the Buddhist temples and ceremonies, even when the landscape is covered with snow. He is able to capture the incandescent light from lanterns along a forest path, as well as the subtlety of the sun through shoji screens at dawn. Depositions of people or priests are often blurred, due to long exposures used during low lighting conditions.

Nagasaka has been with the Weston Gallery since 1997. His work is purchased by a full spectrum of worldwide collectors. People are attracted by the quiet beauty and subtle, almost painterly, quality of his images. His color images convey the peacefulness and deeply spiritual nature of Koyasan. A perfect example of this is his image of SILENCE OF WINTER.

I am proud to represent Nagasaka in my Gallery, to introduce his work to my clientele and to be his friend.
